Solar Powered Mini Dress

Solar Powered Dress

‘The Day for Night: Modular Extensible Reconfigurable’ is a dress made completely out of circuit boards and solar cells. I guess having a long name makes up for being incredibly short. The mini dress is made over 400 little circuit board, some of which contain solar cells. The dresses software can be updated and it also has an RF transmitter so you can send signals to your laptop. I have no idea what you’d be sending other news of severe chaffing.

Wearable tech is quickly becoming popular, and in some cases actually usable. There are a number of backpacks with solar cells on them that provide very usable recharging power for iPods and phones. As for this little dress I’m just left wondering – where do you carry your iPod?

NodorO: a Solution for Male Genital Odor

Posted on 16 January 2008

If you missed Howard Stern on the David Letterman show talking about Nodoro, then you’re in luck. Here’s the clip. I’m not sure the product qualifies as a gadget, but it’s too odd not to post. Almost unbelievable but I kid you not, this is a real product for what they claim is a real problem. According to NodorO™, Male Genital Odors (MGO) is a problem that affects approximately 33 million, mostly uncircumcised, American males. The solution: NodorO™, a topical cream with the active ingredient of Clotrimazole that is applied to the “smelly” area. There is a very funny (albeit, I assume serious) FAQ page with questions like, “Will NodorO™ remove odors around my scrotum area?” and “What happens if NodorO™ gets in contact with a woman’s genitals?”. All kidding aside, the product is FDA approved and judging by the customer testimonials work great if you have MGO!

Steampunk Techno

Posted on 13 January 2008

One of our tipsters sent me this link. I know it’s been around, but it was just too cool to a pass up posting on. The video is a Wall Street Journal profile on Richard Nagy, a self-proclaimed technofile and artist who considers himself a ‘retro futurist’. His artwork is part of what’s become known as the Steampunk movement. Essentially it involves taking the latest gadgets, gimzos and technology and making them look old – really old.

Nagy demonstrates how he makes laptops and other tech look like they came from the Victorian age. Not only does he handcraft new casings to go around modern day technology, but he also painstakingly disassembles and reconfigures the inner workings so that they fit right into old, existing frameworks. For example he’s put the inner workings of a bass amp into an old Philco radio cabinet. And the video shows some of the amazing work he’s done by taking apart computer keyboards.

So the next time you’re ready to ditch that outdated mouse, or roll the old Bondi iMac down a hill, think about giving it a new unique life as something really old.

New Military Uniforms Incorporate Tourniquets

Posted on 26 December 2007

tourniquet uniform

Blackhawk, a military uniform provider is coming out with a new uniform that incorporates tourniquets into the arms and legs. The idea came from an Army surgeon Dr. Keith Rose, after watching a fellow solider bleed to death.

Rose could not get his comrade a tourniquet, which could have helped control the bleeding on his wounded leg, and sat along the mangled wreckage and talked with him as he took his last breath.

“It really kind of frustrated me,” Rose said.

Once he returned to the U.S., Rose approached BlackHawk, a provider of military and law enforcement gear, with an idea to create clothes with built-in tourniquets.

The uniforms will be fitted with eight tourniquets and available in March.

Float Around the World in a Manned Cloud

Posted on 24 December 2007

Manned Cloud Luxury Airship
The Manned Cloud is yet another attempt at a giant airship. Opting this time to fill it with Helium (smart move), Massaud Studio has created the concept in cooperation with the centre of French aerospace research (ONERA). The giant blimp is a floating 60 room luxury hotel that would take travelers around the world on 3-day cruises. While these are obviously renderings of the ship, the Manned Cloud is going to be produced for real and should take to the skies (and lots of money from your pocket) in about a year. One more interior rendering after the jump.

Asteroid on Collision Course with Mars

Posted on 21 December 2007

An asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, is on course to hit Mars near the end of January. The asteroid, was discovered in November and scientist had the odds of it striking the red planet at 350 to 1, but recently upgraded those odds to 75 to 1.

“We know that it’s going to fly by Mars and most likely going to miss, but there’s a possibility of an impact,” he said.Mars asteroid

If the asteroid does smash into Mars, it will probably hit near the equator close to where the rover Opportunity has been exploring the Martian plains since 2004. The robot is not in danger because it lies outside the impact zone. Speeding at 8 miles a second, a collision would carve a hole the size of the famed Meteor Crater in Arizona.

As long as it’s not hitting Earth, this flying rock stuff is kind of cool.

Man Turns Blue After Using Odd Gadget

Posted on 20 December 2007

Do you remember when George drank that concoction from the medical healer and turned blue? I don’t know if that Seinfeld plot was based off of this guy, but this is one of the craziest stories I have heard. For the past 14 years, 57-year-old Paul Karason has slowly been turning blue after using some odd gadget to inject silver into water. Paul was using the water as a universal cure-all, but insists that the turning blue side effect is from him rubbing it on his skin and not from drinking it. I could not make this stuff up, and apparently neither could Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.
